Recovery through Group Therapy
Group therapy at Harmony Place, exclusively for women, includes group counseling, interactive group counseling, and family therapy. Although we at Harmony Place also conduct individual therapy sessions, group therapy is essential to our success in supporting long-term sobriety in our clients.
By sharing stories, ideas, experiences, and feelings, women can benefit both from listening to and confiding in their female peers. By listening to others with similar experiences, they can validate their own concerns by recognizing that their experiences are shared by others. Women can then include and identify themselves with others and, through others, raise their own self-esteem.
As with all forms of therapy, group therapy is a form of catharsis, a release of emotional stress through free expression. It can even give women a sense of altruism, since they can help others by sharing their views and experiences. This simultaneously raises self-esteem and helps develop interpersonal skills.
Group members empathize with each other’s failures but they also feed off of each other’s success when therapy is conducted properly. Seeing and hearing the small victories of their peers first hand can give them hope.
Also essential to recovery, our staff consists of a variety of skilled and motivated individuals, each with firm beliefs that long-term sobriety is possible. The quality of our staff is important because any of our individual staff members can make a lasting impression on the entire experience of our clients.
Even after treatment is complete, alumnae of Harmony Place are invited to participate in our Alumni Group, which not only aims to prevent relapses but also endeavors to maximize improvement and functionality in a social environment. |
