Heroin, a semi-synthetic opioid drug synthesized from morphine, was designed in attempt to find a less potent and less addictive alternative to morphine. It was marketed as such and even as a cure for morphine addiction by the Bayer pharmaceutical company from 1898 to 1910, until it was revealed that the drug was roughly twice as potent as morphine.
